WebMar 12, 2024 · Organophosphate poisoning occurs after dermal, respiratory, or oral exposure to either organophosphate pesticides (e.g., chlorpyrifos, dimethoate, malathion, parathion) or nerve agents (e.g., tabun, sarin), causing inhibition of acetylcholinesterase at nerve synapses. The symptoms of organophosphate poisoning include muscle weakness, fatigue, muscle cramps, fasciculation, and paralysis. Other symptoms include hypertension, and hypoglycemia. Overstimulation of nicotinic acetylcholine receptors in the central nervous system, due to accumulation of ACh, results in anxiety, headache, convulsions, ataxia, depression of respiration and circulation, tremor, general weakness, and potentially coma.
